Types of Shower Doors and Their Variations

Safe Showers!

Shower doors have a big impact on how a bathroom looks and feels overall. Though the flooring, countertops, and fixtures may appear to be more important, the shower door you choose can make or break the design. Fortunately, there are many different shower door styles from which homeowners and designers can select. Here are a few examples:

Sliding doors

The sliding door is one of the most widely used types of doors. They are constructed of two or three glass panels that move back and forth in tracks as they glide past or around one another. The shower is entered by sliding the doors to one side or the other, much like sliding closet doors.

The panels of sliding doors move along established rails and slide past one another when they are opened, taking up no additional space in the bathroom. They are ideal for large, standalone showers and baths because of this. However, they won’t open wide enough to provide access to teeny showers.

Hinged doors

Hinge doors operate similarly to the majority of other door kinds in a house. Two hinges mounted to the wall or a glass panel allow the door to swing out and provide access to the shower. By placing the hinges at practically any height, users can choose how high off the ground they want their shower door to sit.

Typically, the compartment is accessed through hinged doors. Because they require some floor space in front of the shower, they are not the ideal option for small bathrooms. However, due to their design, they are useful for smaller showers that cannot use sliding doors.

Folding doors

Folding doors function similarly to bifold closet doors in that one side is fixed to the wall and the other half slides down a track. They typically consist of two glass panels attached together by two sets of hinges; one set of hinges secures the fixed panel to the wall, and the other set of hinges allows the panels to open and close. When the door opens, the two panels fold over one another and move to either side.

In comparison to hinged or sliding doors, folding doors often occupy only half the floor space and are fully open to provide full access to the shower. Because of the additional hinges, they could be a little more challenging to clean and maintain, but their usefulness in a small bathroom might offset this.
